Heilongjiang is China's northernmost and easternmost province, a vast land of black soil plains, primeval forests, volcanic lakes, and Siberian-cold winters along the Amur (Heilong) River border with Russia. Its capital Harbin blends Russian-era architecture with the world's largest ice and snow festival, while Mohe, the Arctic Village, offers China's best chances of seeing the aurora and the midnight sun. Wetlands, ski resorts, crane habitats, and Hezhen and Manchu heritage complete a region that swings from -30C winters to warm, short summers.
Heilongjiang has a cold-temperate continental monsoon climate with very long, dry, bitterly cold winters and short, warm, humid summers. Harbin's January highs are about minus 12C (10F) with lows near minus 23C (minus 9F), while July highs reach 28C (82F). Mohe, China's northernmost town, is far colder: its record low is about minus 52C (minus 62F), the lowest ever recorded in China. Most rain falls from June to August; winter snowfall is light but the snow stays on the ground from November to March.

Spring
Months: Apr-May
Short and windy. Temperatures climb from 0C to 20C by May; the Songhua River ice melts in April and trees blossom in Harbin in May. Roads can be muddy and Ice and Snow World is closed.
Summer
Months: Jun-Aug
Warm, green, and humid with highs of 26-28C, cooler than most of China. July and August have heavy rain showers. Sun Island, the Songhua River, Harbin Summer Music Concert, and Jingpo Lake are at their best. Around the June solstice Mohe has near-24-hour daylight and occasional aurora.
Fall
Months: Sep-Oct
Crisp and colourful; September highs about 20C and October 11C. Autumn foliage in the Xiaoxing'an Mountains peaks in late September and early October. First snow arrives in late October.
Winter
Months: Nov-Mar
Long, dry, and very cold from November to March. Harbin's January average is minus 18C (0F) and Mohe drops below minus 35C. Ice and Snow World, the Ice and Snow Festival, and Yabuli skiing operate from late December to February. Daylight is short (about 8.5 hours in December).
