Three Streets and Two Alleys (Xingning Road Pedestrian Street)

Three Streets and Two Alleys is a restored historic block in Xingning District, Nanning, built around the Song-dynasty-origin street pattern of Xingning Road, Minsheng Road, and Jiefang Road together with Jinshi Lane and Yinshi Lane. Unlike a generic shopping street, the block preserves Lingnan-style arcade shophouses (qilou) and mixes retail with heritage: gold and jade shops sit alongside family-run businesses that have traded here for generations, plus workshops and small stores tied to Guangxi's intangible cultural heritage crafts, such as embroidery, paper cutting, and traditional snacks. Vendors range from established gold and jade dealers, where authentication and receipts matter for higher-value pieces, to small craft stalls selling tourist-oriented souvenirs of variable quality, so buyers should treat expensive jewellery purchases with the same caution as anywhere else in China and ask for certification on jade or gold. Bargaining is common at the craft and souvenir stalls but far less so at established gold shops, which post prices tied to the daily gold rate; cash and mobile payment are both widely accepted, with cards less common in small stalls, and there is no tax-refund facility on-site. The block draws a steady mix of local residents, photographers, and tourists, and is dotted with snack vendors, tea houses, and a few sit-down restaurants serving Guangxi cuisine within the historic shophouses. The two alleys, Jinshi Lane and Yinshi Lane, are the most atmospheric corners, narrower and quieter than the main pedestrian streets, and are best for browsing craft workshops rather than large purchases.
