Yangguan Pass was the southern gateway of the Han-dynasty Silk Road, lying about 75 km southwest of Dunhuang in Nanhu Township, Gansu, China. Along with Yumenguan to the northwest, it marked the exit from the empire toward the Western Regions, and it features in Tang-dynasty poetry as a symbol of parting and distant frontiers. Little of the original fortress remains.

A Han-dynasty southern gateway on the Silk Road, 75 km southwest of Dunhuang, where a single beacon tower still stands over desert and the Nanhu oasis.

The main historic survivor is a single beacon tower, built of rammed earth, standing on a rise above the desert, and from its base visitors look out over the sand, the gravel plain and the green patch of the Nanhu oasis below. The scenic area surrounding the tower has been developed with a museum, a reconstructed gate and pavilion, statues and a monument that interpret the pass and the figures linked to it, including the diplomat Zhang Qian. A paved road and shuttle-style transport help visitors cover the grounds, and camel rides, horse rides and sightseeing carts are offered at extra cost. The experience is a mix of reconstructed heritage and genuine desert scenery, and the view from the beacon tower is the main reason to go. A visit typically takes one to two hours. Because the pass sits in the Nanhu oasis area, it is often paired with a drive through nearby vineyards and orchards, and the contrast between irrigated farmland and desert is striking. The scenic area is closed from January 1 until mid-March, so winter travellers should check the dates first. Summer afternoons are hot and exposed, and shade is limited, so a hat, water and sun protection matter. Crowds are generally modest, with tour groups most likely around midday. Photographers favour the beacon tower against a clear sky, either in the morning or late in the afternoon when the light is lower. Visitors should confirm opening hours and prices before travelling.
