The Mogao Caves, also called the Mogao Grottoes or the Caves of the Thousand Buddhas, are a UNESCO World Heritage complex cut into a long conglomerate cliff face about 25 km southeast of Dunhuang in Gansu, China. Excavation began in the fourth century and continued for roughly a thousand years, leaving hundreds of caves decorated with murals and painted clay sculptures that chart the development of Chinese Buddhist art along the Silk Road. Visitors do not wander freely.

Entry is by timed, pre-booked ticket, and groups are led by a guide through a selection of about 8 to 12 caves, with the selection varying by day and ticket category. Tickets are collected at the Digital Exhibition Center, where two introductory films are shown before a shuttle carries visitors to the cliff. Inside, the caves are small, dim and lit by guide torches or low lighting, so the experience is one of close looking at flying apsaras, donor portraits, Pure Land paradise scenes and large seated Buddhas. The Library Cave, where a hoard of manuscripts including the Diamond Sutra was found, is part of the story told at the site, although its contents are now held in collections abroad and elsewhere in China. The exterior view of the multi-storey cliff facade, with the tiered wooden entrance of the Nine-Storey Building, is the main photo opportunity, and photography inside the caves is not permitted. A visit typically takes three to four hours including the films and shuttle transfers. Demand is highest from May to October and around national holidays, when daily quotas sell out well in advance; early-morning slots and weekdays are noticeably quieter. In winter, crowds thin and caves can be cold, so a warm layer is useful. Visitors usually combine Mogao with Mingsha Mountain and the Dunhuang night market, and many choose a licensed local guide or the English commentary when available to follow the iconography. Bags and large items are restricted at the cave entrances, and flash and tripods are not allowed. Because ticket categories, prices and visit routes change, visitors should check the official booking page before travelling.
