Gansu Travel Budget 2026

Plan your Gansu trip budget with our comprehensive cost breakdown.

Gansu is a long, narrow province in northwest China that follows the Hexi Corridor, the Silk Road passage between the Qilian Mountains and the Gobi. It joins the Yellow River city of Lanzhou, the Mogao Caves and Mingsha dunes at Dunhuang, the Ming fort at Jiayuguan, the rainbow Danxia hills of Zhangye, and the Tibetan monasteries of Xiahe and Langmusi into one of China's richest cultural and landscape routes.

Local currency: Chinese Yuan Renminbi (CNY / RMB, symbol ¥).

Money-saving tips

Practical ways to stretch your budget further.

Save

Book Mogao Caves tickets as early as the booking window allows; the cheaper off-season ticket (December to March, about CNY 140-160 / $21-24 USD) saves around CNY 100 per person and queues are short.

Save

Eat where locals eat: Lanzhou beef noodle shops open from early morning and a bowl costs CNY 12-20 (approx $1.80-3 USD), and Zhengning Road Night Market in Lanzhou has meals for under CNY 30 (approx $4.50 USD).

Save

Take the high-speed train between Lanzhou, Zhangye West and Jiayuguan South; second-class seats on the Lanzhou-Zhangye leg cost around CNY 150-200 (approx $22-30 USD) compared with a CNY 600+ private car.

Save

Visit Zhangye Danxia and Dunhuang outside July, August and the October 1 holiday week, when hotel rooms double in price and tickets sell out.

Save

Use the Yellow River riverside, Baita Mountain, and Gansu Provincial Museum as free anchor activities in Lanzhou and keep paid sites to one or two per day.

Save

Join a shared minivan day trip from Lanzhou to Bingling Temple or from Xiahe to Sangke Grassland rather than hiring a private car; shared seats are about CNY 100-200 (approx $15-30 USD).

Hidden costs to watch for

Charges that catch travellers by surprise.

Heads up

Mogao Caves peak-season tickets (April to November) are about CNY 238 for the standard ticket and CNY 258 for the foreign-language ticket (approx $35-38 USD), and the Digital Exhibition Center is included, but a private guide or add-on caves cost extra.

Heads up

Dunhuang's Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Moon Spring have a base ticket, and camel rides (about CNY 120-180), sandboarding, sand sleds, and the cable car are billed separately and can double the cost.

Heads up

Bingling Temple's CNY 50 ticket excludes the speedboat from Liujiaxia Reservoir (about CNY 140-160 return) and the special-cave fees for the best caves, for example Cave 169 at about CNY 300 (approx $44 USD).

Heads up

Zhangye Danxia's base ticket includes the sightseeing bus, but the bus stops are tied to the schedule and visitors who want sunrise or sunset light often hire a private car or pay extra for in-depth tickets (about CNY 328-368).

Heads up

Foreign-language guide fees at Labrang Monastery are an extra CNY 40-100 on top of the CNY 40 entrance, and photography inside some halls is prohibited or carries a fee.

Heads up

Long distances: Lanzhou to Dunhuang is about 1,100 km (a 2.5-hour flight or a 12-hour high-speed train ride), so internal flights or sleeper trains are a major line item. Book a train ticket early in summer.
