Đồ Sơn Beach

Đồ Sơn Beach sits at the tip of a small peninsula in Hải Phòng, on the Gulf of Tonkin coast of northern Vietnam, roughly 120 km southeast of Hà Nội. It is the capital region's oldest and most accessible seaside resort, and it has drawn weekend visitors from the Red River Delta for well over a century. The shoreline is a sandy-silt beach, not the white sand of central or southern Vietnam. Because the Red River and neighbouring estuaries discharge nearby, the water is brownish and murky for much of the year, and visitors should not expect the clarity found around Cát Bà or in the south. The gradient is gentle and the sea is generally calm inside the peninsula, which makes it workable for paddling and casual swimming. The waterfront is divided into numbered zones, with Khu 1, Khu 2 and Khu 3 being the best known, each with its own character. Khu 1 near Vạn Sơn is the busiest and most commercial, lined with hotels, cafés and seafood restaurants. The beach is a mainstream, family and group-holiday destination, not a surf or party beach, although the resort area also has the Đồ Sơn casino, which operates under restricted entry rules. Amenities are typical of a Vietnamese domestic resort: rental sunbeds and umbrellas, showers and toilets for a small fee, and many seafood restaurants and stalls selling fresh crab, squid, clams and shrimp. Lifeguards are posted in the main season, roughly May to September, and swimming outside the marked areas is discouraged. Access is straightforward. Buses run from Gia Lâm and Nước Ngầm stations in Hà Nội to Đồ Sơn in about two to two and a half hours, at around 100,000-150,000 VND, and many visitors drive along the expressway to Hải Phòng and continue by road. Ride-hailing apps are unreliable for the full distance. The peninsula road links the beach zones, with hills, pagodas and viewpoints a short ride away, and local motorbike taxis and electric carts cover short hops. On summer weekends and public holidays traffic on the approach roads and parking near the beach both become congested, so an early start makes a considerable difference. The resort is at its liveliest from June to August, when the water is warmest.
