Cát Cò Beaches (Cát Bà Island)

The Cát Cò beaches are three small sandy coves, Cát Cò 1, Cát Cò 2 and Cát Cò 3, on the edge of Cát Bà town on Cát Bà Island, the largest island of the Hạ Long-Cát Bà archipelago in Hải Phòng, northern Vietnam. Each cove is enclosed by limestone headlands, giving a sheltered, bay-like shape rather than a long open strand. The sand is fine and pale, and the water is clearer and calmer than at the mainland beaches such as Đồ Sơn, although visibility still varies with weather and tides. Because the coves face into a protected bay, surf is negligible and swimming is generally gentle. Cát Cò 1 is the largest and most developed, backed by hotels, cafés and beach restaurants, and it is the most popular with families and domestic tour groups. Cát Cò 2 and Cát Cò 3 are smaller, connected by a walkway and steps around the rocks, and are somewhat quieter. The atmosphere is relaxed and family-oriented, not a party scene, although Cát Bà town has bars and seafood restaurants close by. Amenities include sunbed and umbrella rental, showers, beach restaurants and kayak and stand-up paddleboard hire. Lifeguard cover is limited to the main season, and visitors should swim within the marked areas. The limestone karst backdrop makes the coves well suited to photography around sunrise and late afternoon. Reaching the island takes some planning. From Hà Nội, visitors take a bus to Hải Phòng, then a speedboat or ferry from Bến Bính or Đình Vũ to Cát Bà, a journey of about 150 km and three and a half to four hours in total. Combined limousine and ferry tickets sold in the Hà Nội Old Quarter cost around 200,000-350,000 VND. From Cát Bà town the coves are a short walk or brief taxi or motorbike ride from most hotels. Cát Bà National Park, Lan Hạ Bay boat trips and Hạ Long Bay cruises all start nearby, so many visitors combine a beach afternoon with an island itinerary.
