Perge Ancient City

Perge, situated in the Aksu District of Antalya province, was one of the most prosperous cities of ancient Pamphylia and today ranks among the best-preserved archaeological sites in Turkey. The city reached its peak during the Roman Imperial period, and the remains reflect that golden era through an impressive array of monumental structures spread across a flat, walkable landscape. Visitors enter through a series of gateways, beginning with the Hellenistic towers and courtyard and proceeding through the Roman gate into the main colonnaded street. This grand avenue, once paved with marble and flanked by water channels that ran along both sides, stretches northward toward the acropolis hill and is one of the most photogenic features of the site. On either side of the colonnaded street stand the remains of baths, shops, a nymphaeum, and public monuments. The stadium, located just outside the main city walls, is among the largest in the ancient world, capable of seating approximately 12,000 spectators, and its curved seating banks and vaulted substructures remain largely intact. The agora, south of the main street, preserves its colonnade and is shaded enough to be comfortable even in summer. The baths complex contains elaborate floor mosaics and decorative stonework. Statues recovered from Perge form a major part of the Antalya Archaeological Museum's collection, so visiting the museum before or after the site enhances the experience significantly. Perge receives fewer large tour groups than Aspendos, meaning quieter conditions for exploration. The site has no shade over much of its extent, so morning visits, appropriate footwear, and carrying water are essential. A thorough visit takes two to three hours.
