Amanpuri occupies a private headland on Pansea Beach on Phuket's north-west coast, roughly 35 kilometres from Phuket International Airport and about 20 kilometres from Patong Beach. The property opened in 1988 as the flagship of the Aman group — the first resort to bear the name — and remains one of the defining addresses in Asian luxury travel. Architect Ed Tuttle drew on classical Thai temple architecture, producing 30 teak-floored pavilions and 40 private villas scattered across a coconut grove that slopes to a private stretch of pale sand.
Accommodation ranges from hillside Pavilions with open-air sala terraces to multi-bedroom Pool Villas with private infinity pools, separate living pavilions, and gardens. Interiors are deliberately spare — dark wood, stone finishes, and silk fabrics — designed to let the landscape dominate rather than the furnishings.
Dining centres on The Restaurant, which serves Thai and pan-Asian cuisine in an open-sided sala above the beach, and Nama, the Japanese restaurant that opened in 2019 and brings a Tokyo-quality omakase counter to the resort. Breakfast is an elaborate multi-cuisine spread served in the same pavilion each morning.
The Aman Spa offers traditional Thai massage, Ayurvedic treatments, and a comprehensive wellness programme. Facilities include a 25-metre lap pool, a secondary seawater pool at beach level, tennis courts, a water-sports centre with scuba diving and snorkelling, and a yoga pavilion set among the coconut palms.
Service operates on an extraordinarily high staff-to-guest ratio. A dedicated team handles pre-arrival planning and on-property logistics from restaurant reservations to charter boat arrangements. The resort is adults-oriented in character but welcomes children, and Pansea Beach is accessible only to guests of Amanpuri and the adjacent Aman-managed villas, ensuring near-total privacy on the sand.
