Tarangire Sopa Lodge sits on a rocky kopje — a granite outcrop typical of Tanzania's northern savannah — overlooking the Tarangire National Park, part of the Manyara Region's northern circuit. The lodge is positioned along the park's western boundary, roughly 120 kilometres southwest of Arusha and accessible by road in around two hours or by light aircraft to the Tarangire airstrip, which is approximately 10 kilometres away. Tarangire is most celebrated for its exceptional elephant concentrations, particularly during the dry season from June to October when large herds gather along the Tarangire River. Ancient baobab trees define the park's landscape and provide a distinctive backdrop to game drives unavailable in the Serengeti or Ngorongoro.
The lodge consists of 75 rondavels — circular thatched-roof rooms designed after traditional African round-house construction — arranged across the hillside in a pattern that maximises views over the baobab-dotted plains below. Each rondavel features stone-and-timber construction, twin or double beds, en-suite bathroom, private veranda, and air conditioning. The circular design and thick-walled construction keep interiors cool during the midday heat.
A central main building houses the restaurant, bar, and a terrace that extends over the kopje edge to provide panoramic sunset views across the savannah.
