Migombani Campsite

Migombani Campsite is located in Karatu, a small highland town at the base of the Ngorongoro escarpment, approximately 10 kilometers from the Lodoare Gate entrance to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Karatu sits at around 1,500 meters in the fertile coffee and banana belt of the Mbulu Highlands, giving it a reliably cool, green environment distinct from the arid lowlands of the Rift Valley nearby. The campsite serves primarily as an affordable staging post for travelers combining Ngorongoro crater visits with Serengeti safaris, and as a base for overland group itineraries passing through on the northern Tanzania circuit.

Accommodation options range from basic tent pitches with shared ablution blocks to simple single-room bungalows with concrete floors and mosquito nets. A central bar and restaurant area serves inexpensive meals throughout the day — grilled meat, rice, beans, ugali, and vegetable dishes form the staple menu alongside cold local beer and soft drinks. A fireside bonfire area creates a social atmosphere after dark, and the campsite maintains a lively mixed crowd from overland trucks and independent backpackers sharing route information and safari contacts. Hot showers are available via a wood-fired boiler system. Wi-Fi is present but inconsistent. Staff assist with arranging shared game-drive vehicles into the Ngorongoro Crater to split costs among multiple travelers, and they coordinate Maasai cultural village visits in the surrounding hills.
