Hatari Lodge

Hatari Lodge sits in the Momella area on the northern boundary of Arusha National Park, about 30 km from Arusha city at the foot of Mount Meru, in the same landscape where the 1962 John Wayne film "Hatari!" was partly filmed — a connection the lodge draws its name and much of its decor from. Built as the former farmhouse of the film's production, the lodge retains a distinctive 1960s safari aesthetic: rooms are furnished with vintage memorabilia, period furniture, and safari-era photography rather than a contemporary luxury look, giving it a genuine sense of place unusual among northern-circuit lodges. The handful of rooms and suites are spacious, with fireplaces and views over the Momella plains toward Mount Meru and, on clear days, Kilimanjaro. Dining includes a main restaurant and occasional bush breakfasts or sundowners set up in the surrounding landscape, and there is an outdoor pool for use between activities. The lodge does not run a formal spa, focusing instead on its access to wildlife: its position on the park boundary gives direct, uncrowded access to game drives and walking safaris in Arusha National Park's Momella sector, known for giraffe, buffalo, and flamingo-filled crater lakes. Service is highly personalised and bespoke, typical of a small owner-run lodge, suited to travellers who value character and wildlife access over resort-style amenities.
