The ornate Urumea river bridge flanked by four obelisks, linking the Ensanche with Gros.
The Maria Cristina bridge crosses the Urumea river between the Centro district and Gros, linking the Ensanche with the east of the city. Built in the early 20th century and named after the queen regent who summered here, it is decorated with four tall obelisks at its corners topped by sculptures and is a symbol of the Belle Epoque city. It stands beside the Hotel Maria Cristina and the Victoria Eugenia Theatre, forming with them one of the best-known architectural groups of San Sebastian. Walking across takes only a couple of minutes, and the view along the river to the Kursaal cubes is a favourite photograph. The bridge is free and open at all times, and is especially atmospheric at dusk when the lamps come on. During the film festival, it forms part of the route for celebrities between the venues.
