The Plaza de la Constitucion is the main square of the old town, built as part of the rebuilding after the fire of 1813 and surrounded by uniform arcaded buildings. The numbered balconies recall that the square once held bullfights, with each balcony rented as a box. The former town hall on the north side later became a library after the council moved to the Gran Casino building on the seafront.

The arcaded square of the rebuilt old town, with numbered balconies from its bullfighting days.

The square was the main public space of the old town, hosting markets, proclamations and festivals. It remains the centre of the Tamborrada on 20 January, when the city marks the festival of Saint Sebastian with drums from midnight. Cafes occupy the arcades, and the narrow lanes around the square lead to the pintxo bars. Visitors who look up will see the balcony numbers, a trace of that earlier life.
