The neo-Gothic cathedral at the centre of the 19th-century Ensanche.
The Buen Pastor Cathedral stands at the heart of the Ensanche, the grid of streets laid out when the city expanded beyond its old walls in the second half of the 19th century. It was designed by the architect Manuel de Echave in neo-Gothic style and consecrated in 1897, with a spire of around 75 metres. The cathedral symbolises the confidence of the Belle Epoque city and the growth of the bourgeoisie, and it became the seat of the Diocese of San Sebastian. The interior has tall columns, stained glass and a large nave. It is located within a short walk of the Boulevard, Calle Loyola and the Alderdi Eder gardens. Visitors can enter when no service is on, and the exterior is best seen from the square in front. Hours vary by source, so check the door notice.
