The Monasterio de San Jerónimo is the first Renaissance monastery in Granada, Andalusia, and the burial place of Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba, the Great Captain. It was founded by the Catholic Monarchs in 1492 and moved to its present site in 1504, with work running through the 16th century by Diego de Siloé and others. The cloister has a double gallery of arches and orange trees, and the church interior is covered in painted ceilings. Gold and frescoes cover the main chapel, which is decorated with scenes of the Great Captain's life. His crypt lies in the sanctuary. The site is still partly a working convent, which gives it a peaceful atmosphere. A visit lasts about 45 minutes. It is a short walk from the Cathedral, but far fewer tourists find it.
