Šmarna Gora is the hill Ljubljana residents climb more than any other, a 669 m limestone summit about 9 km north of the city centre that rises from the Ljubljana basin like an island. The most popular route starts in Tacen, on the bank of the Sava, and climbs about 370 m through beech and hornbeam woods on a wide, well-trodden path in roughly an hour. At the top stand a pilgrimage church dedicated to the Mother of God, a bell that visitors traditionally ring for good luck, and a mountain inn serving simple food and drinks, although opening days vary by season. Views stretch over the Ljubljana Marsh, the Kamnik-Savinja Alps and, on clear days, the Julian Alps and Triglav. A neighbouring summit, Grmada at 676 m, can be reached by a short ridge path of about 15 minutes. Several marked variants descend to Gameljne, Vikrče and Smlednik, so loops of two to three hours are easy to build. The path is busy on weekends and at sunrise, and many residents climb after work in summer. Sturdy shoes are useful because the limestone is polished and slippery when wet. Water can be bought at the summit inn, but carrying a bottle is sensible. The park around the hill is part of the Šmarna Gora and Grmada landscape area and trail information is published by the mountaineering association of Slovenia (pzs.si).
