The Miradouro do Pico dos Barcelos, in the Santo António parish above Funchal on Madeira, is one of the city's easiest and most rewarding viewpoints. From a terrace at around 355 metres, the frame looks south over Funchal's amphitheatre of terraced hillsides, with the red-tiled roofs, church towers and apartment blocks in the middle ground, the harbour and marina below, and the Atlantic horizon behind. Cruise ships often sit at the quay, adding scale and interest.

The viewpoint faces south, so the sun passes behind the photographer for much of the day, giving front light on the city in the morning and side-to-back light later, with sunset glowing to the west over the bay. Golden hour brings warm tones on the buildings, while blue hour is the standout moment, as street lamps and harbour lights come on and the sky shifts to deep blue. A tripod is therefore the key accessory, along with a wide-angle lens for the full amphitheatre and a 70–200mm telephoto for the bay and ships. Clear autumn evenings give the cleanest air, though the viewpoint works year-round; haze and cloud can reduce visibility in summer afternoons. The terrace is small, and tour buses stop here in the daytime, so it can get crowded; arriving 30 minutes before golden hour secures a place at the railing. Tripods are generally tolerated if they do not block the walkway. Drone use is subject to Portuguese aviation rules and is restricted near the city and the airport corridor. There is no entrance fee, and a small cafe operates nearby, with restrooms at the cafe. The road up is steep and winding, and parking is limited.
