About Funchal

Funchal is the capital of Madeira, a subtropical Atlantic island belonging to Portugal and lying about 1,000 km from Lisbon and 600 km off the coast of Morocco. The city climbs an amphitheater of green hills from the harbor, with banana terraces, flower-filled gardens, and a cable car that carries visitors to the cloud-level village of Monte. An Art Deco market hall, a cobbled Old Town of painted doors, historic wine lodges, and fresh espetada, scabbardfish, and bolo do caco define a distinctive local food scene. Its mild climate makes Funchal a year-round destination and the base for levada walks, whale watching, and drives to cliffs, fishing villages, and mountain peaks across the island.

Best places to visit in Funchal

The 20 destinations our editors recommend — from iconic landmarks to under-the-radar finds.

Mercado dos Lavradores

A 1940 Art Deco market hall where fruit and vegetable stalls, flower sellers in traditional dress, and a tiled fish market sell Madeiran produce. Exotic fruit such as anona, passion fruit, and banana-maracujá can be tasted before buying.

Sé Cathedral of Funchal

Funchal's cathedral was built between roughly 1493 and 1514 in late-Gothic and Manueline style. Its best-known feature is the carved cedar and ivory-inlaid ceiling in the Mudéjar tradition, and the sugar-era wealth of the island is visible in the choir stalls.

Funchal Cable Car (Teleférico do Funchal)

A gondola lift that rises about 560 m from the Old Town waterfront to Monte in roughly 15 minutes, with views over rooftops, banana terraces, and the bay. The upper station connects to Monte Palace and the church, and a second cable car links Monte to the Botanical Garden.

Monte Palace Tropical Garden

A hillside estate of about seven hectares holding African and Asian tropical plants, cycads, orchids, ponds, and a large collection of Portuguese azulejo panels. The grounds also house a museum of African sculpture and a mineral collection.

Church of Nossa Senhora do Monte

The twin-towered hilltop church houses the venerated image of Nossa Senhora do Monte, patron saint of Madeira, and the tomb of Emperor Charles I of Austria, who died in exile in Madeira in 1922. A broad stair of 68 steps climbs to the entrance.

Monte Toboggan Ride

Wicker basket sledges (carros de cesto), steered by two carreiros in white with straw hats, slide about 2 km down steep streets from Monte toward Livramento. The ride has run since the 19th century, and taxis at the end point return riders to Funchal.

Cafés, neighbourhood gems, and tasting menus worth the table reservation.

Armazém do Sal

Contemporary Madeiran and Portuguese · $$$

A contemporary restaurant set in a former salt warehouse on Rua da Alfândega, in the old quarter behind the cathedral. The kitchen reworks Madeiran and Portuguese produce into plated dishes, in a room noticeably more formal than the tascas of nearby Rua de Santa Maria.

Ákua

Madeiran seafood · $$$

A compact seafood restaurant run by chef Júlio Pereira in the old quarter, working from a short menu that follows the day's boat. Fish is cooked simply, in some cases over fire, and the small room fills quickly at lunch with a mix of local diners and visitors.

Kampo by Chef Júlio Pereira

Portuguese grill, regional ingredients · $$$

A produce-led restaurant on Rua da Alfândega with an open counter, from the same chef as nearby Ákua. The menu centres on matured beef cuts for sharing alongside regional ingredients.

Lá ao Fundo

Contemporary Portuguese · $$

A small chef-owned restaurant at the fortress end of the Zona Velha, at the far end of the painted-door street. The kitchen changes its signature dish daily according to what arrives from the market, and only a few tables sit on the terrace.

Tasca Literária Dona Joana Rabo-de-Peixe

Madeiran petiscos · $

A casual tasca on Rua de Santa Maria that serves petiscos (small plates) and poncha. Its open all-day hours make it a convenient stop between meals while walking the Zona Velha.

O Regional

Traditional Madeiran · $$

A traditional Madeiran restaurant on Rua de Dom Carlos I in the old town, serving regional dishes including espetada. The menu follows the classic island repertoire rather than contemporary reinterpretations.

Spring brings the Madeira Flower Festival and green hillsides, while September-October offers warm weather and the Wine Festival in late summer.
