Cabo Girão is one of the highest sea cliffs in Europe, rising about 580 metres above the Atlantic between Funchal and Ribeira Brava, in the municipality of Câmara de Lobos on Madeira. The Miradouro do Cabo Girão at Fontainhas do Mar features a glass-floored skywalk that projects out from the cliff edge, giving a frame with the transparent platform and railing in the foreground, the cultivated fajã terraces and small farm plots far below in the middle ground, and the open ocean stretching to the horizon behind them. The cliff faces roughly south, so the sea and terraces are lit from the side in early morning and from the west in late afternoon, which is the best way to bring out the texture of the cliff face and the geometry of the farms. Midday sun is directly overhead and flattens the scene. Summer offers the cleanest, haze-free light, but the viewpoint works year-round, and passing cloud can add drama. A wide-angle lens of 16–24mm captures the cliff and platform, a polarising filter deepens the sea and reduces haze, and a 100–300mm telephoto isolates the terraced farms and workers far below. The skywalk is a major coach stop and can be crowded from mid-morning, particularly in high season; arriving at opening or in late afternoon gives clearer sightlines and easier access to the glass panels. Tripods can be difficult on the narrow platform, and visitors should avoid blocking the walkway. Drone use is subject to Portuguese aviation rules and local restrictions, and flying over the cliff edge crowd is discouraged. A small entry fee is charged for the skywalk, and cafe and restroom facilities are available near the car park. Wind at the edge can be strong, so camera straps are advisable.
