The PR8 Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço crosses the long, narrow eastern peninsula of Madeira, Portugal, within the Ponta de São Lourenço nature reserve about 30 km east of Funchal. The trailhead is the Baía d'Abra car park near Caniçal. Visitors usually drive or take a taxi from Funchal, which takes about 40 minutes, or use a SAM bus to Caniçal and then a taxi to the car park. Access requires a reservation through the SIMplifica system, priced at €4.50 per person. The route covers about 8 km return and takes 2.5 to 3 hours, with around 300 m of cumulative gain over repeated ups and downs rather than one sustained climb. That places it in the moderate category. The surface is a mix of packed earth, volcanic gravel and stone steps, and the path follows exposed clifftops where drops are unfenced in places. Shade is scarce along the entire route, and wind can be strong, so sun protection and a windproof layer are important. The scenery is arid, with red and ochre volcanic cliffs, sea stacks and a view across the Atlantic that differs sharply from the green interior of Madeira. Landmarks include the viewpoint at Casa do Sardinha, a small refreshment and information building near the far end, the Miradouro da Abra and the sheltered cove of Prainha, where swimming is possible in summer. The usual turn-around is the Casa do Sardinha area, with the optional side trail to Pico do Furado at the far tip for those who want extra distance. Water is not available along the path itself, apart from limited refreshments at Casa do Sardinha when open, so about 2 litres per person should be carried. Rangers ask walkers to stay on marked paths to protect the nesting seabirds and fragile vegetation.
