The Levada do Caniçal is an irrigation channel trail on the eastern side of Madeira, Portugal, running from the Maroços area above Machico toward the fishing town of Caniçal. The trailhead lies in Machico municipality, about 25 km from Funchal. Visitors normally take a SAM bus from Funchal to Machico, which takes about 45 minutes and costs around €2.60 in cash, and then continue by taxi to Maroços. The return from Caniçal is by taxi or by bus back to Machico. The walk covers about 5 to 6 km one-way and takes 2 to 2.5 hours, and it can be extended toward Porto da Cruz for a longer day. The levada itself is level, but the access path involves roughly 300 m of ascent, so the effort is moderate overall. The surface is mostly a narrow concrete channel edge and packed earth, with sections of exposure where the path hugs the hillside and a few places with a drop beside the water channel. Several tunnels cut through the ridges and are dark and wet underfoot, so a head torch is necessary. Shade is intermittent: patches of eucalyptus and heath give relief, while open stretches are sunny and windy because of the eastern position. Landmarks include views of the Machico valley, the dry eastern coastline and the Ponta de São Lourenço peninsula in the distance. Turn-around points are possible wherever the path becomes uncomfortable, as the route is a single line and can be retraced. There are no huts or reliable water sources, so water and food should be carried from the start. Rockfall on the tunnel section is a known risk after heavy rain, and walking should be avoided in or immediately after wet weather.
