Praia do Camilo

Praia do Camilo is a small, sheltered cove on the coast south of Lagos, reached by descending a long wooden staircase that winds down through tall ochre-coloured cliffs. The sand is fine and golden but limited in area, especially at high tide, when the cove narrows considerably and the beach can feel crowded despite its intimate size. The water is notably clear and calm, protected from swell by the surrounding rock formations and the offshore stacks that also make the cove one of the most photographed spots in the western Algarve. A rope bridge connects the main cove to a smaller adjoining beach, adding to its appeal for exploring on foot at low tide. The atmosphere is intimate rather than lively - a mix of couples, photographers, and swimmers rather than large groups, since the limited space and long staircase discourage big beach setups. A small seasonal bar operates in summer, along with basic toilet facilities, but there is no permanent restaurant and no year-round lifeguard, with cover typically limited to peak summer weeks. Parking is scarce, restricted to a small clifftop area shared with nearby Ponta da Piedade, and spaces disappear early on sunny days. There is no public transport directly to the beach; the walk from central Lagos takes around 30 to 40 minutes along the clifftop path, which itself offers striking views over the grotto coastline, or a short taxi ride covers the same distance in a few minutes. Given the staircase descent and lack of shade, the cove suits an active visit of a few hours rather than a full day.
