Meia Praia

Meia Praia is a broad, four-kilometre stretch of golden sand running north from the mouth of the Lagos estuary, and is one of the largest and least developed beaches in the western Algarve. Unlike the string of small cliff-backed coves nearby, Meia Praia is flat and open, with sand dunes rather than cliffs along much of its length, giving it far greater capacity to absorb crowds even in peak summer. The water is generally clear but more exposed to wind and swell than the sheltered coves to the south, and the eastern stretch toward Alvor is well known among windsurfers and kitesurfers for its consistent afternoon thermal winds. The atmosphere shifts along the beach's length: the section nearest Lagos marina is more developed, with several beach bars, restaurants, and watersports operators, while the stretch further from town is quieter and less crowded. It suits a wide range of visitors, from families wanting space to spread out, to watersports enthusiasts chasing wind, to walkers covering long distances on firm sand. Amenities include multiple seasonal beach bars, watersports equipment hire, lifeguard cover in the main summer season, and reasonably plentiful parking compared with the cliff beaches nearby. The beach is a short walk from Lagos train station and the marina, making it one of the more accessible beaches in the area without a car, and a beach-side path connects the marina end to the quieter northern stretches. Because of its length, visitors who want solitude simply need to walk further from the main access points near town.
