Praia da Marinha

Praia da Marinha sits beneath a low limestone cliff on the coast near Lagoa in the Algarve, and is regarded as one of the most photographed beaches in Portugal. The sand is fine and golden, narrow at high tide and widening considerably at low tide to reveal a series of connected coves separated by dramatic amber rock arches and stacks. The water is exceptionally clear, ranging from pale turquoise in the shallows to deep blue further out, with visibility that regularly exceeds ten metres on calm days, making it a magnet for snorkellers exploring the submerged rock formations and small caves along the shoreline. The cove is partially sheltered by the surrounding cliffs, which cuts wind exposure compared with more open stretches of coast, though a moderate Atlantic swell can still reach the beach outside summer. The atmosphere is romantic and scenic rather than boisterous - couples and photographers outnumber families with young children, since the descent and lack of shade make it less suited to long days with toddlers. A small summer-only bar serves drinks and snacks, and sunbeds and umbrellas can be rented in season, but there are no permanent restaurant facilities and no lifeguard cover outside the main summer months. Parking is limited to a small clifftop car park roughly ten to fifteen minutes' walk from the sand via a steep staircase, and it fills quickly on summer mornings, with overflow cars lining the approach road. There is no direct public transport to the beach; the nearest bus services run to Carvoeiro and Lagoa, from which a taxi or car is needed. Visitors often combine a trip to Praia da Marinha with a walk along the Seven Hanging Valleys trail, which passes above the cove and links it to nearby beaches including Vale Centeanes and Benagil.
