Praia da Amoreira

Praia da Amoreira lies on the wild Costa Vicentina coast west of Aljezur, at the point where the Aljezur River widens into a broad estuary before meeting the Atlantic. The beach is expansive and largely undeveloped, backed by dunes and low cliffs rather than resort infrastructure, and the sand is coarser and less manicured than the sheltered coves further south in the Algarve. The estuary side offers calm, shallow water well suited to children and gentle swimming, while the open ocean side carries a consistent Atlantic swell that draws surfers year-round, making the beach genuinely split in character depending on which side is chosen. Wind exposure is significant, as with most of this west-facing coast, and afternoons often bring stronger onshore breezes. The atmosphere is wild and unhurried rather than developed, appealing to surfers, hikers, and those seeking a quieter alternative to the busier south-coast beaches. Amenities are minimal: a seasonal beach bar operates in summer, parking is limited and informal, and a surf school operates nearby offering lessons and board hire. There is no confirmed lifeguard cover outside peak weeks. The beach forms part of the Rota Vicentina coastal walking network, and the clifftop and estuary paths offer good birdwatching, particularly for wading birds in the estuary shallows. Reaching the beach requires a car or taxi from Aljezur, roughly five kilometres away, as there is no direct public bus service to the beach itself.
