Ilha de Tavira

Ilha de Tavira is a long barrier island beach off the eastern Algarve coast, reached only by a short ferry crossing from Tavira town or from the closer Quatro Águas landing. The sand is fine, pale, and extends for several kilometres along the ocean-facing side of the island, backed by low dunes rather than cliffs, with minimal permanent development compared with the mainland resort beaches. The water is generally clear and the beach is exposed to the open Atlantic, so swell and wind can be stronger here than on the sheltered lagoon side of the Ria Formosa. The atmosphere is relaxed and spread out, with visitors thinning out considerably the further one walks from the ferry landing, making it possible to find near-empty sand even in summer. A designated area toward one end of the island is used for nude sunbathing. Amenities are seasonal and clustered near the main ferry landing, with a handful of beach bars and toilet facilities; there is no lifeguard cover confirmed across the whole island, and swimmers should be aware of currents given the open ocean exposure. There is no vehicle access; the island is reached entirely by ferry, which runs regularly in summer from both Tavira and Quatro Águas, with a reduced schedule outside peak season. The Ria Formosa lagoon side of the island, visible from the ferry crossing, is an important habitat for wading birds, adding an ecological dimension to a visit beyond the beach itself.
