Praia do Camilo

Praia do Camilo is a small, sheltered cove near Lagos reached by a long wooden staircase that zigzags down through ochre-coloured cliffs, opening onto a compact beach of fine sand flanked by rock formations and a narrow arch connecting to a second small cove next door. The limited size of the beach, no more than a hundred metres across, is part of its appeal: the clear water in the enclosed bay is generally calm and well suited to swimming and snorkelling around the rocks at either end, where small fish gather in the shallows. A visit typically lasts 1.5 to 3 hours, enough time to swim, sunbathe on the sand, and walk across the connecting arch to the adjoining cove at low tide. Because the beach is so small, it fills quickly in peak season, and the modest car park at the top of the stairs is often full by mid-morning in July and August, making an early arrival before 10am the most reliable way to secure both parking and beach space. The staircase itself, with roughly 200 steps, offers photogenic views down over the cove and rock formations on the way down, and the ochre cliffs take on warmer tones in the late afternoon light. The beach sits just over a kilometre from the Ponta da Piedade headland, making it easy to combine both stops in a single outing along this stretch of coastline south of Lagos.
