Praia de Meia Praia

Praia de Meia Praia extends roughly 4km northeast from Lagos marina toward the mouth of the Alvor estuary, its broad, flat expanse of golden sand a marked contrast to the small enclosed coves that dominate the coastline further south around Lagos and Ponta da Piedade. The beach's width and consistent onshore wind make it one of the Algarve's principal spots for kitesurfing and windsurfing, with rental and lesson operators concentrated toward the eastern end near the Alvor estuary mouth, an area also valued for its views across the water to the estuary's wetlands. Because Meia Praia stretches for several kilometres and has multiple access points along the beach road, it rarely feels as crowded as the smaller coves near Lagos even in peak season, and visitors can generally find open sand by walking a short distance from any entrance. A visit typically lasts two to four hours, whether for swimming, sunbathing, or a watersports lesson, and the beach road behind the dunes offers straightforward, generally accessible parking along its length. Morning conditions are usually calmest, suiting swimmers and families, while the wind typically strengthens through the afternoon, drawing kitesurfers and windsurfers out onto the water. The beach is a short walk or drive from Lagos town, making it an easy addition to a day that also includes the old town or Ponta da Piedade.
