Praia Grande de Porto Covo

Praia Grande de Porto Covo is the main beach of the whitewashed fishing village of Porto Covo, about 12km south of Sines, and one of the more accessible and family-friendly beaches on this stretch of the Alentejo coast. The sand is fine and pale, set within a broad, gently curving bay that offers more shelter from wind and swell than the fully open beaches further south, making the water generally calmer and better suited to family swimming. Views extend across to the small island of Pessegueiro just offshore, and the southern starting point of the Rota Vicentina's Fishermen's Trail begins nearby, drawing walkers as well as beachgoers. The village itself sits directly above the beach, with restaurants, cafés, and small shops within easy walking distance, giving Praia Grande a more resort-like, convenient feel than the more isolated beaches further along the coast. A beach bar operates on the sand in season, lifeguards patrol between June and September, and parking is available near the village, though it fills quickly on summer weekends given the beach's popularity with both Portuguese and international visitors. A seasonal coastal bus connects Porto Covo to Sines and onward, offering a rare public-transport option among the beaches of this coastline, though most visitors still arrive by car. The beach's combination of calmer water, village amenities, and scenic views toward Pessegueiro island makes it a good base for a full day at the coast, whether swimming, exploring the village's fish restaurants, or setting out on the coastal walking trail.
