Praia do Malhão

Praia do Malhão sits within the Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina Natural Park, about 5km north of Vila Nova de Milfontes, and ranks among the least crowded and most naturally intact beaches on the entire Alentejo coast. The beach is expansive and fully undeveloped, with fine golden sand backed by high, wild dunes and clifftop scrubland rather than any built infrastructure, and it stretches far enough that even summer visitors rarely feel crowded. The Atlantic swell here is consistently strong, making Malhão one of the region's most reliable surf breaks and a regular stop for surf schools based in Vila Nova de Milfontes, while the exposed, open setting also means the wind can pick up quickly, especially in the afternoon. Water clarity is generally good, but the surf and occasional strong currents mean the beach suits confident swimmers and surfers more than families with small children looking for calm, shallow water. Facilities are minimal by design, in keeping with the beach's protected natural-park status: a seasonal beach bar operates in the busiest summer weeks, but there are no permanent restaurants, shops, or lifeguard towers, and parking is limited to an informal clearing set back from the dune line. There is no public transport to the beach, so a car is necessary, and the approach involves a walk down through the dunes from the parking area. The natural-park setting also means the surrounding cliffs and dune systems are protected habitat, and visitors are asked to stick to marked paths where they exist rather than cutting new trails through the dune vegetation. Malhão's combination of consistent surf, dramatic scenery, and near-total lack of development makes it a favorite among surfers and travellers seeking the wildest version of this coastline, year-round for surfing and June to September for swimming.
