Praia das Furnas

Praia das Furnas lies about 2km south of Vila Nova de Milfontes, on the open Atlantic coast beyond the shelter of the Mira estuary, and offers a noticeably different character from the calm river-mouth beach at Franquia closer to town. The beach is backed by low cliffs rather than dunes, and the sand is fine but the surf is stronger and swell more consistent, since the beach faces the open sea without the estuary's protection. This makes Furnas popular with surfers and bodyboarders, while swimmers should expect livelier conditions and pay closer attention to the flagged, lifeguard-patrolled area operating between June and September. Water clarity is generally good, and the cliffside setting gives the beach a slightly more dramatic, scenic feel than the flatter estuary beach in town, with informal clifftop parking offering views out over the water before the walk down to the sand. A seasonal beach bar operates in peak summer months, but there is no full restaurant on site, and most visitors either bring supplies or walk the twenty minutes back into Vila Nova de Milfontes for a meal. The walk from town along the coastal path is itself a pleasant option for visitors without a car, following the clifftop above the sea before descending to the beach, though a car remains the faster way to arrive, particularly with beach gear. Because it is close to town but on the open coast, Praia das Furnas works well as a second beach for visitors already based in Vila Nova de Milfontes who want stronger surf or a quieter stretch of sand than the busier Franquia beach, especially outside the peak midday hours in August.
