Praia da Franquia

Praia da Franquia sits at the mouth of the Mira river, directly adjacent to the centre of Vila Nova de Milfontes, making it one of the most convenient and family-friendly beaches on the Alentejo coast. Unlike the fully open Atlantic beaches further along the coast, Franquia benefits from the shelter of the river estuary, giving it notably calm, shallow water that warms faster than the open sea and suits young children and inexperienced swimmers well. The sand is fine and pale, and the beach curves gently along the river mouth with views across to Vila Nova de Milfontes' waterfront and the small fort overlooking the estuary. Because it sits right against the town, Praia da Franquia is the most developed beach in the area, with several beach bars and restaurants lining the sand and the streets just behind it, sunbed rental, lifeguards on duty from June to September, and ample though busy parking. The short walking distance from the town centre, combined with a Rede Expressos bus connection to Vila Nova de Milfontes, makes this one of the few beaches on this stretch of coast reachable without a car, a genuine advantage for visitors without their own transport. The sheltered water also makes it popular for stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking on the calmer inner stretch of the estuary, and small boats sometimes cross to the far riverbank. Because of its convenience and calm water, Praia da Franquia gets considerably busier than the open-coast beaches nearby during summer, particularly at midday, though the town's amenities mean visitors can easily combine a swim with lunch, shopping, or an evening stroll along the waterfront.
