Praia do Almograve

Praia do Almograve, about 14km south of Vila Nova de Milfontes, is a golden sand beach widely regarded as one of the finest wild beaches in Portugal, cut through by ridges of dark basalt rock that form striking natural tide pools at low tide. The beach is broad and fully exposed to the open Atlantic, with fine golden sand and a moderate to strong swell that makes it popular with surfers, while the black rock formations running down toward the water create a dramatic, layered landscape unlike the smoother dune beaches further north. At low tide, the basalt pools fill with clear seawater and become a natural feature for children and adults to explore, examining small fish, crabs, and anemones caught between the rocks, a distinctive draw that sets Almograve apart from other beaches on this stretch of coast. The surrounding cliffs and scrubland are part of the protected Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina Natural Park, and the beach itself remains largely undeveloped, with only a seasonal beach bar operating in peak summer months and no permanent restaurant or shop on site. Parking is limited to an informal area near the clifftop, close to the small village of Almograve, and while it can fill on August weekends, the beach's overall wildness and distance from major towns keep it quieter than the more established beaches around Comporta or Vila Nova de Milfontes. There is no public transport directly to the beach, so a car is necessary, typically approaching via the village of Almograve a short drive inland. The combination of golden sand, basalt rock pools, and consistently good surf makes this beach a favorite for both families exploring the tide pools at low tide and surfers drawn to its swell, particularly outside the busiest midsummer weeks.
