The Hel Peninsula is a narrow sandy spit that reaches about 35 km into the Baltic from the Pomeranian coast, with the Baltic on one side and the Bay of Puck on the other. The town of Hel at its tip lies about 90 km north of Gdansk by road, and the journey takes about 2-2.5 hours from Gdansk by train or about 1h30 from Gdynia. Polregio trains run from Gdynia Glowna along the peninsula for roughly 17-24 PLN one way, though some autumn services run on weekends only or as rail buses. In season the Zegluga Gdanska boats from Gdansk, Sopot and Gdynia offer a more scenic crossing, with Gdynia to Hel at around 45 PLN. Driving is possible via Reda and the DW215 road, but summer weekends bring heavy congestion and paid parking in Hel. The main attraction is the Fokarium at Morska 2, a seal sanctuary run by the University of Gdansk where grey seals are cared for and fed with a talk at 11:00 and 14:00, plus 12:30 and 15:30 in July and August. Entry is 25 PLN, or 20 PLN reduced. Beyond the sanctuary, visitors can walk the old fishing town of Hel, stroll its wide beaches, cycle the peninsula's dedicated path and visit the lighthouse and museum area near the harbour. A suggested day starts with a morning train or boat so that arrival is before the 11:00 feeding, followed by the Fokarium, then lunch of fresh smoked or fried fish at the harbour kiosks and cafes. The afternoon suits a beach walk or a bike ride towards Jurata, with a return before evening, since last trains and boats leave early outside July and August. The best season is June to September, with early June and September offering fewer crowds. Fokarium hours are 10:00-16:00 from October to April, 10:00-17:00 in May, June and September, and 10:00-18:00 in July and August.
