Słowiński National Park is a UNESCO biosphere reserve on the Baltic coast near Łeba, in Poland's Pomeranian region, and the Łącka Dune is its best-known sight. The park contains Europe's best-known moving dunes, sand hills up to about 40 m high that drift inland by several metres a year between the Baltic Sea and Lake Łebsko. The usual approach is from the Rąbka entrance, from which visitors walk around 2.5 km along a boardwalk and trail through pine forest before the landscape opens into a vast expanse of bare sand. The scene is often compared to a desert, with ripples shaped by the wind, dead tree trunks emerging from the sand and the sea visible beyond the crest. Climbing the dune gives a wide view over the lake, the forest and the coast. The park charges about 12 PLN for adults and about 6 PLN reduced. A visit typically takes three to four hours including the walk in and out, and visitors can reach Rąbka from Łeba, about 5 km away, on foot, by hired e-vehicle, or by seasonal shuttle, or by car to the Rąbka car park. The park is open daily, and the dune trail typically runs from 8AM until sunset in the season. The best times are early morning and sunset, before and after the heat and crowds; midday in July and August is the busiest and hottest period, with little shade on the sand. Photographers favour low light for the shapes of the ripples and the long shadows. Wind-blown sand can be hard on cameras and eyes. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes, bring water, sun protection and a windproof layer, and stay on marked paths, since the dunes are a protected environment.
