Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is Pakistan's northwestern province, a mountainous region bordering Afghanistan that holds Peshawar, one of South Asia's oldest living cities, the Gandhara Buddhist ruins of Takht-i-Bahi, and the Himalayan, Karakoram and Hindu Kush valleys of Swat, Kaghan, Chitral and Dir. Travel conditions vary sharply by district, and official advisories advise against all or most travel to much of the province.

About Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa spans roughly 101,741 square kilometres from the Indus plains around Peshawar to the Hindu Kush peaks above Chitral. Peshawar, the capital, sits at the eastern end of the Khyber Pass and has been a trading city for over 2,000 years. To the north and east lie the Swat valley, the Galiyat hill stations near Abbottabad, the Kaghan Valley and the Kalash valleys of Chitral. Pashto is the main language, with Hindko, Khowar and Kohistani widely spoken, and the province is known for its tribal hospitality, kebabs and Gandhara art. The UK FCDO advises against all travel to Swat and along the N45 to Chitral City including the Kalash valleys, and against all-but-essential travel to Malakand, Shangla, Swabi, Mardan and Nowshera; US and UK advisories also flag most of the province including Peshawar, so visitors should plan with current official guidance, register with the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Tourism Authority and consider an experienced local operator.

Gor Khuttree Archaeological Complex

A walled complex on a Kushan-era mound once crowned by a Buddhist stupa and later a Mughal caravanserai; it now houses a small museum, a Hindu temple and a historic fire station.

Getting around Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Most visitors arrive via Islamabad International Airport (ISB), about 2.5 hours from Peshawar on the M-1 motorway, or fly directly to Bacha Khan International Airport (PEW) in Peshawar. From Peshawar, N-5 (the Grand Trunk Road) runs east to Rawalpindi and west to the Torkham border, N-35 (Karakoram Highway) runs through Abbottabad, Mansehra and Besham toward Gilgit-Baltistan, and N45 runs north through Mardan, Dir and Chitral via the Lowari tunnel. Intercity coaches, trains and flights are limited; the practical choice is a hired car or 4x4 with a driver. Security advisories restrict much of the north.
