Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is Pakistan's northwestern province, a mountainous region bordering Afghanistan that holds Peshawar, one of South Asia's oldest living cities, the Gandhara Buddhist ruins of Takht-i-Bahi, and the Himalayan, Karakoram and Hindu Kush valleys of Swat, Kaghan, Chitral and Dir. Travel conditions vary sharply by district, and official advisories advise against all or most travel to much of the province.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa spans a hot semi-arid plains climate around Peshawar and Mardan and an alpine climate in the Hindu Kush, Karakoram foothills and Himalayan-edge valleys. Peshawar summers exceed 40 C with a short monsoon, winters are cold but mild by day, while Swat, Kaghan, Chitral and Kalash are cool in summer and snowbound in winter. Elevation is the main variable: temperature falls roughly 6 C per 1,000 m.
