The Grand Socco, officially Place du 9 Avril 1947, is the large open square where the Ville Nouvelle meets the medina gate of Bab Fahs. It works as a daily neighborhood market rather than a souvenir bazaar: farmers from the Rif sell fruit, vegetables, olives, herbs, bread and flowers on and around the square, while stalls on the edges sell clothing, household goods and some souvenirs.

Because most customers are locals, prices are fair and the share of genuine goods is high. The square also holds the Cinema Rif and the Cinemateque de Tanger, and cafes on the surrounding terraces look over the traffic and stalls. Payment is in cash, and small notes help; light bargaining is accepted on clothing and souvenirs but not on produce sold by weight. The Rue es-Siaghine begins at the lower corner and descends into the medina toward the Petit Socco, so the square is the natural starting point for any shopping walk.
