The Kasbah Museum occupies the Dar el Makhzen palace in the Kasbah and is the main museum of Tangier's history and Moroccan arts. Its rooms show archaeology of northern Morocco from prehistory through the Phoenician, Roman and Islamic periods, with Roman mosaics, ceramics and bronze objects, followed by carpets, embroidery, manuscripts, jewellery and musical instruments from the Alaouite era. The palace itself is as interesting as the displays, with painted ceilings, a courtyard fountain and a small Andalusian garden. A separate contemporary-art space nearby is sometimes included on the same ticket. The museum is closed on Tuesdays and hours change seasonally, so visitors check at the desk. Labels are mainly in French, Arabic and English.
