Pie de la Cuesta and Coyuca Lagoon

Pie de la Cuesta sits about 13 km northwest of downtown Acapulco along the coastal road, a 30 to 40 minute drive, local bus, or combi ride, making it one of the closer day trips from the city. The village occupies a narrow strip of land between the freshwater Coyuca Lagoon and the open Pacific, and the main activity is a boat tour through the lagoon's mangrove channels, where guides point out herons, storks, cormorants, and other resident waterbirds along with the small Pajaros Island bird sanctuary. A typical visit starts in the late morning with the lagoon boat tour, lasting roughly one to two hours, followed by a lakeside seafood lunch at one of the palapa restaurants lining the shore, many of which serve fresh fish and shrimp caught locally. The ocean-facing beach has a strong undertow that makes it unsuited to swimming, so afternoons are better spent relaxing at a lagoon-side restaurant or walking the sand rather than entering the surf. Pie de la Cuesta is especially well known locally for its sunset views, with the open western horizon over the Pacific drawing visitors back in the late afternoon regardless of what else fills the day, and several restaurants along the beach set up seating specifically for the sunset hour. Because the trip is short from Acapulco, it works well as a half-day outing, departing in the late morning for the lagoon tour and lunch, or as a late-afternoon trip timed to end with the sunset. The dry season from November through April offers the clearest skies for the sunset views, though the lagoon tours run year-round.
