Barra de Potosí

Barra de Potosí sits about 25 km south of Zihuatanejo, a 30 to 35 minute drive along the coastal road, with taxis and organized lagoon tours also running the route from either Zihuatanejo or Ixtapa's hotel zones. The village occupies a sandbar between the open Pacific and the Laguna de Potosí, an 800-hectare mangrove-fringed lagoon that supports herons, egrets, and other resident birdlife, best seen on a short guided boat tour through the mangrove channels. A typical day begins with a morning boat tour of the lagoon, lasting about an hour, followed by time on the open beach for swimming in the calmer surf that the sandbar location provides compared with more exposed stretches of coast. Lunch is usually taken at one of the simple palapa restaurants lining the beach, most specializing in freshly caught fish and shrimp served straight from the morning's catch. The combination of an easy lagoon tour, a swim, and a seafood lunch makes Barra de Potosí a practical half-day trip, though many visitors extend it into a full day by adding a longer beach walk toward the quieter southern end of the sandbar. Because the drive from Zihuatanejo is short, the trip works well earlier or later in the day to avoid the midday heat on the open beach, and the dry season from November through April brings the calmest lagoon conditions for the boat tour. The village remains a working fishing community, so mornings also offer a chance to see local fishing boats bringing in the day's catch along the shore.
