A day itinerary typically starts with a morning walk through the Zocalo and surrounding government buildings, followed by a stop at the cathedral and the nearby independence-history monuments, before continuing to the municipal market streets for a look at local goods and produce away from Acapulco's coastal tourist areas. Because Chilpancingo functions primarily as an administrative and transit city rather than a resort destination, an afternoon here is usually enough to cover the historic core, and many travelers treat it as a stop along the highway corridor toward Taxco or Mexico City rather than a full separate day. Simple market fondas around the Zocalo serve regional Guerrero dishes such as pozole verde, a specialty associated with the state, making it a practical lunch stop before continuing the drive.
