Grutas de Cacahuamilpa National Park

The Grutas de Cacahuamilpa lie in Pilcaya municipality, Guerrero, about 30 km northeast of Taxco and roughly 300 km north of Acapulco, reached by a paved 40-minute drive from Taxco or a direct combi from Taxco's bus terminal; travelers coming straight from Acapulco typically budget 3 to 3.5 hours combining both legs of the route. The park protects one of Mexico's largest show caves, a chain of enormous limestone chambers formed by an underground river, with ceilings reaching over 80 meters in places and chambers strung with dramatic stalactite and stalagmite formations lit along a fixed walking path. Entry is by timed guided tour rather than independent exploration, with groups departing at set intervals through the day to walk the roughly 2-km lit route through the main chambers, a walk of about 1.5 to 2 hours at an easy, level pace. A typical day arrives at the caves by mid-morning, joins the next available guided group, and finishes the walk-through by early afternoon, leaving time to continue on to Taxco or back toward Acapulco before evening. The site includes a small restaurant and snack stand near the entrance for a lunch stop after the tour, and the surrounding park has picnic areas and a zip-line canopy attraction for visitors extending the stop into a longer afternoon. Because the caves maintain a stable interior temperature year-round regardless of outside season, the trip works in any month, though arriving early in the day avoids the larger tour groups that build up by early afternoon, particularly on weekends. Most visitors combine the caves with Taxco given the short 40-minute drive between the two sites, arriving at whichever site is closer to their route first and finishing at the other by late afternoon.
