Maison d'Hôtes Ouadane

Maison d'Hôtes Ouadane is a traditional guesthouse set within Ouadane's historic old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the eastern Adrar region of Mauritania near the edge of the Majabat al-Koubra, one of the Sahara's most desolate interior zones. Ouadane was founded in the 12th century as a caravan crossroads where trans-Saharan trade routes converged, and it retains its ancient stone architecture largely intact: narrow lanes between sand-coloured stone walls, ruined multi-storey houses, and a mosque with origins dating to the medieval period. The guesthouse is built into this old-town fabric, with walls of local schist and sandstone that have stood for generations. The rooms are simply furnished — traditional wooden-frame beds or mattresses on raised platforms, woven rugs, small windows overlooking the lane or a shared courtyard — and bathrooms are basic with cold water. Electricity is available in the evenings by generator. Meals are the guesthouse's social centrepiece: the host family prepares communal dinners of slow-cooked lamb, millet couscous, or camel meat depending on availability, served with fresh flatbread and the obligatory rounds of sweet mint tea. The upper terrace provides wide views over the ancient city's stone rooftops and the sand plain beyond, particularly striking at dawn. Local guides based at or connected to the guesthouse lead walks through the old-quarter ruins and longer excursions by camel or 4x4 toward the Richat Structure (Eye of the Sahara), approximately 40 kilometres to the south-west. The guesthouse is one of very few accommodation options in Ouadane and the most characterful of them, sitting within the living historic fabric rather than on the town's newer outskirts.
