Campement Touristique (Chinguetti)

The Campement Touristique sits at the edge of Chinguetti, one of Islam's seven holy cities and a UNESCO World Heritage Site embedded in the Adrar plateau of north-central Mauritania. The ancient town, with its medieval mosques and dwindling manuscript libraries, is a short walk from the camp's perimeter, while the towering sand dunes that encroach on the settlement's western flank begin just beyond the last stone walls. The campement offers two basic accommodation styles: simple adobe-style rooms with single beds and shared tile-floor bathrooms, and traditional Mauritanian nomad tents (khaymas) furnished with woven mats and sleeping rolls laid over packed-sand floors. Both options are clean and serviceable; neither has private plumbing. Electricity is available in the evenings via a generator, allowing mobile charging and minimal lighting. Meals are included in the nightly rate and follow traditional rhythms: tea ceremonies after arrival, communal evening tagines and couscous with meat or vegetables, and flatbread at breakfast. Staff are experienced guides who lead half-day and full-day dune excursions by camel or 4x4, visit the ancient library ruins, and conduct night-sky observation sessions. Stargazing is exceptional given the complete absence of light pollution within 100 kilometres. The campement does not have a pool, spa, or air conditioning. Advance contact by telephone is advisable during the peak season of November through February, when European and North American overland groups pass through Chinguetti in numbers. The campement's informal structure means meals and tour packages can often be negotiated on arrival.
