Sandboarding at Tottori Sand Dunes

Sandboarding on the Tottori Sand Dunes lets visitors slide down the steep slopes of Japan's largest coastal dune field on a waxed board, standing or seated depending on confidence and experience. Sessions run through the Tottori Sand Dunes Sandboard School on the eastern dune field closest to the Sakyu Center, where instructors give a short safety and technique briefing before each 90-minute session. No prior boarding experience is required; participants should be reasonably fit enough to trudge back up the dune slope repeatedly, and there is no strict age limit though the school generally expects children to be old enough to follow safety instructions independently. The board, boots, and mandatory insurance are included in the session fee; participants are expected to bring their own gloves, sunglasses or goggles against blowing sand, and sunscreen. The school is the main established operator in the area and has run guided sessions on the dunes for years, with staff positioned to supervise the slope and manage queuing between runs. A brief safety talk covers how to fall safely and how to avoid other boarders on the slope; because the terrain is open sand rather than a controlled park, the main risk is collision or a hard fall rather than any need for formal rescue infrastructure. The dunes are climbable and rideable year-round, but the cooler months from October to May offer firmer, slightly damper sand that holds an edge better than the loose, hot sand of high summer, when the surface is harder to push through and the exposed slope gets very hot underfoot.
