Marine Sports at Hakuto Beach

Hakuto Beach, on the Sea of Japan coast near Tottori City, runs stand-up paddleboarding and bodyboarding rentals through a seasonal sea house (umi-no-ie) that operates during the official bathing season. Activities are confined to the marked swimming zone, kept separate from the surf break used by surfers further along the beach, making this a low-barrier entry point for casual paddleboarding or bodyboarding without needing to negotiate waves or currents in open water. No prior experience or certification is needed; equipment rental staff at the sea house provide boards and, on request, a life jacket, and sessions are informal rather than guided, so participants are expected to use common sense around swimming zone boundaries and other beachgoers. There is no dedicated rescue infrastructure beyond the general beach lifeguard presence typical of an official bathing beach during the sea-bathing season, and swimmers and paddlers are expected to stay within the marked zone where oversight is available. The activity is only available during the official bathing season of July and August, when the sea house is open and the beach is patrolled; outside these months the rental stall is closed. Late July offers a good window before the Obon-week crowds of mid-August fill the beach and rental equipment.
