Tandem Paragliding over Tottori Sand Dunes

Tandem paragliding above the Tottori Sand Dunes pairs a passenger with a certified instructor for a foot-launched flight off the high dune ridge known as Uma-no-Se, gliding out over the dune field and the Sea of Japan coastline before landing back on the sand. Two established operators, Zero Paraglider School and West Japan Outdoor School, run tandem flights here; both require no prior paragliding experience since the instructor controls the wing and steering throughout, though passengers must be able to run a few steps at launch and land on their feet, which effectively rules out very young children or anyone with significant mobility limitations. Harness, helmet, and wing are provided, and instructors give a pre-flight safety briefing covering body position, the launch run, and landing procedure; because flights are tandem with a licensed instructor in control, there is no separate rescue plan beyond the instructor's standard abort-and-relaunch protocol if wind conditions are unsuitable at the moment of launch. Flights are weather-dependent and can be delayed or cancelled if winds are too strong, too light, or blowing from the wrong direction off the Sea of Japan, so schools typically book a half-day window even though the flight itself lasts only 5–15 minutes. Spring and autumn bring the steadiest onshore winds for consistent flying conditions, while summer heat and winter storms make launches less predictable.
