Shirahige-hama Beach

Shirahige-hama Beach is a modest lakeside swimming spot on the southern edge of Takashima City, defined less by the size of its sand and more by its view of Shirahige Shrine's vermilion torii gate rising directly out of Lake Biwa just offshore. The shoreline is narrow and pebbly in places rather than a wide sand expanse, with a mix of coarse sand and small stones underfoot; the water is clear close to shore, giving good visibility of the lakebed and the submerged base of the torii. The beach sits in a fairly open stretch along National Route 161, with mild exposure to lake winds but no real surf. It draws a mixed crowd of swimmers and photographers rather than a dedicated swimming destination, and it is noticeably quieter than Omi-Maiko Beach further south, appealing to visitors who want a lower-key lakeside stop paired with a shrine visit. Facilities are minimal: there are no full-scale changing rooms or showers, and food options are limited to what visitors bring or find in nearby Omi-Takashima. Parking is informal, along pull-offs on Route 161 near the shrine, and spaces are limited, filling early on weekends when photographers arrive for sunrise or golden-hour shots of the torii. Visitors without a car can reach the area via the JR Kosei Line to Omi-Takashima Station, followed by a short taxi or bus ride along Route 161. Because the shrine and the water sit so close together, the site works better as a scenic and photographic stop with a swim than as a full beach-day destination with extensive amenities.
